Alan Thicke had all his basal codes merged to Wood as Authority: (3) and (12) merged to Wood, (12)(4)(8) also merged to Wood. Obviously, that’s too much Authority that needed to be controlled. In another word, he had Wood and Water as foe. Metal served as favor, because Fire 4 was merged by 9 to Wood, the Metal code 8 was the only code that could control Authority Wood. 

Alan Thicke’s good fortune started 1985, and since then he had 30 years of Earth-Metal fortune that can counter Wood-Water. Most importantly, Alan Thicke had Metal as favor for attacking the overpowering Wood.
