The reason that his Wood was crucial but he didn't die in the Metal fortune (9) and (10) is: the root of Wood was (12). (12) is Water that contains Wood. Metal generate Water and Water generate Wood. So Metal codes (9) and (10) would not hurt Wood. On the other hand, (6) crushes (12) directly. Without the root and support of (12), Wood became vulnerable to Metal.
