What is really "Inside the mind of a master procrastinator"

I saw a ted talk today, Inside the mind of a master procrastinator by Tim Urban.

In the talk, he blames the “Instant Gratification Monkey”, and the “Panic Monster” saves the day. So what is really happening “inside the mind of a master procrastinator”? What is the true form and real relationship between the “Instant Gratification Monkey” and the “Panic Monster”? The answer is in fortune telling theory.

There are lots of inventions in psychology, Iike: one theory divides all personalities into nine types. But, why nine? How do you know there isn't a tenth? Another theory uses different animals to represents different characters, like Lion people, Rabbit people and Dog people. How do you know those are all the type? How do you know there isn’t a “Zebra people” or even “Bacteria people” out there? Another theory uses different colors to mark people. Let me guess: Red people are passionate, White people are pure, Green people love peace, right? How do you know all the all people types match all the visible light? What if there’s a “Ultraviolet people”?

Psychologist divide people in groups because they cut the cake that way, but it doesn’t mean the cake should be cut like that. They don’t even know there’s a “correct way” to cut the cake. On the other hand, there are 10 characters in life code for a objective reason: there are only five possible relations between one element and another, times Yin and Yang, so 10 possible relations between a code and another code. We didn’t invent “10 characters”, there are “10 characters”

Even without the fortune telling part, the fortune telling theory is an excellent psychology model. Like I said in my book, psychologist’s personality models always fail at some point because they don’t know what “personality” really is. Someone ignores the complexity of human mind and divides people into groups violently; some sees the complexity of human mind and declares it is impossible to abstract human consciousness, they are both wrong. No matter how you divide people into different groups, there always someone in between, this is because people have more than one character, and people’s characters are not just gather together, they are systemised, layered and interactive. Some of the characters are displayed on the outside (first line characters), some of them are stay inside (basal line characters), some of them are powerful and some of them are weak, and they have relations with each other. It is complicated, but conceptualizable and comprehendible.

In fortune telling, Shield is the sign of procrastinating. The description of Shield is: conservative, rational, dependent and face-saving. If you go down to the fundamental level, Shield is another code support the self code, all the description of Shield is fundamentally: self protect. In another word, Shield is a part of you that support and protect your ego. When you say to yourself: it’s ok, don’t worry. It is your Shield taking to you. Now you know why Shield represents procrastinating? It is a comfort zone.

On the other hand, pressure is represented by Authority, because Authority overcomes the self code. People with strong Authority are responsible, and sometimes destructive, because Authority against yourself. People fight when they are against.

The characters have overcome and support relationship just like element, but it is not a new rule, it is an inference of five elements interaction: breaking characters down to elements, you will find the two rules are the same thing. For example, someone’s life code is Wood, so Fire is his Talent and Metal is his Authority, we can say Talent overcome Authority as well as Fire overcomes Metal.

The 10 characters interaction is a basic rule with no reason, but it makes a lot of sense if we think about it:

Generating interactions
Shield supports Strength: being conservative makes people ego;
Strength supports Talent: ego people are prone to show off;
Talent supports Money: dreamers are driven to do something to achieve their dreams;
Money supports Authority: the more you are involved into the world, the more you have to compromise yourself;
Authority supports Shield: people under pressure are prone to be conservative;

Overcoming interactions
Money overcomes Shield: people who do the actual work don’t have the vision and mindset to do theory study;
Shield overcomes Talent: logical thinking restrains people’s imagination and lower people’s desire;
Talent overcomes Authority: releasing is the most powerful thing against pressure;
Authority overcomes Strength: self-discipline people discipline themselves;
Strength overcomes Money: fighting and struggling alone wouldn’t make you a successful businessman;

If you read the interactions, you’ll see that Authority generates (or we can say grows, supports) Shield. In another word, it is the “Panic Monster” that gives birth to the “Instant Gratification Monkey”. Tim Urban is wrong about the relation between parts of his mind. What really happened is “Instant Gratification Monkey” is created by the “Panic Monster”. You want to stay in the comfort zone for the fear of the pressure. The more you afraid of the “Panic Monster”, the stronger the “Instant Gratification Monkey”.

By the relations, the real enemy of the “Instant Gratification Monkey” which is Shield is Money, and the description of Money is: bold, realistic, adventurous, like to do. Money represents wealth and girls (for men), because being bold is the way to get girls and sells. Money makes people bold and confident because fundamentally, Money means another code being overcome by the self code. Self code (ego)is the winner. So Money is a winner mentality which is the real enemy of the “Instant Gratification Monkey”.
